Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, the Deputy Premier and Commander of the National Guard, on Monday chaired the Cabinet’s weekly meeting at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh.
At the outset of the session, the Cabinet discussed the postponement of the Arab Summit meeting, which was to be held in Tunisia. Crown prince Abdullah stressed the need to reconvene the meeting as soon as possible, and to promote Arab dialogue and cooperation.
In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) following the session, the Minister of Culture and Information, Dr Fouad bin Abdulsalam Al-Farsy, said that the Cabinet was briefed on recent meetings and consultation held with leaders and officials of other countries, which discussed regional and international developments.
The Crown Prince informed the Cabinet of the current situation in occupied Palestinian territories, Israel’s incessant aggressive practices against the Palestinian people and their consequences for the explosive situation in Palestine. He urged the international community to force Israel to comply with international resolutions and put an end to the inhuman practices and acts of aggression against Palestinians which abort attempts to achieve a peaceful settlement.
The Cabinet reviewed the development of girls’ education in the Kingdom. In public education, the number of female students reached 2.3 million. The Cabinet noted the directive issued by Crown Prince Abdullah to transform Riyadh’s colleges for girls into a university, as part of the government’s policy, led by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz, to provide education for all citizens.
Dr Al-Farsy said that the Cabinet then reviewed domestic items on its agenda and took the following decisions:
The Interior Minister or his deputy was authorized to sign an agreement on cooperation between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in the field of extradition of accused and convicted individuals. The originals of the agreement will be forwarded for further documentation.
The Cabinet authorized the Minister of Foreign Affairs or his deputy to sign the draft agreement on cooperation between the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the government of the Republic of Albania in economic, commercial, investment, technical, cultural, sports and youth fields. The originals of the agreement will be forwarded for further documentation.
The Cabinet authorized the Minister of Finance or his deputy to discuss and sign the agreement on cooperation in the customs field between the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the government of the Republic of Yemen. The originals of the agreement will be forwarded for further documentation.
The Cabinet decided on the accession of Saudi Arabia to the World Health Organization’s Anti-Tobacco draft agreement.
The Cabinet approved the appointment of Abdulrahman bin Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Dahmash as Consultant for Technical Affairs at the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs; Dr Saad bin Abdulrahman bin Abdullah Al-‘Ammar as Ambassador at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Dr Salih bin Abdulrahman bin Salih Al-Amro as Deputy Governor for Development at the General Corporation for Technical Education and Vocational Training; and Adnan bin Abdullah bin Abdulwahab as Minister Plenipotentiary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
