21Mar2004 Discovery of gas in Al-Shaibah field

Riyadh, 21st March 2004

Gas was discovered in Al-Shaibah field on Tuesday at an average of 20 million cubic feet and 650 barrels of condensates a day, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Naimi announced.

In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the Minister pointed out that Saudi Aramco had discovered gas at a depth of 7,815 feet in Al-Shaibah field in the Kingdom’s Eastern Region. He added that the discovery is significant because it lies in a new zone where non-associated gas had not yet been discovered. The well is located 600 kilometres south-east of Dhahran and 800 kilometres south-east of Riyadh. “The new discovery added a vital, important dimension to Al-Shaibah field that produces an average of 500,000 barrels per day of very light Arabian oil,” Al-Naimi said.
