Prince Sattam bin Abdul Aziz, the Vice-Governor of Riyadh Region, today patronized the Riyadh International Conference for Communications and Information Technology for 1425H, which was overseen by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
Upon arrival at the venue, Prince Sattam was received by the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Mohammed bin Jameel bin Ahmed Mulla, and a number of officials. A speech ceremony was held on the occasion.
Addressing the conference, Prince Sattam said that, in accordance with the policy of economic reform, the government of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz has accorded great attention to the communications and information technology sector. He cited the issuance of a communications regulation and royal orders to reorganize the sector and to establish the Authority of Communications and Information Technology.
Prince Sattam added that the government has promoted privatisation of the sector, leading to the establishment of what has become one of the most prominent telecommunications companies in the region, and various companies specialising in satellite communications services. Licenses will be issued to telephone, data and other service-sector companies to promote an information society and implement the concept of ‘electronic government’, Prince Sattam said.
The ceremony was attended by a number of princes, ministers and officials.
Earlier today, the Minister of Communications and Technology inaugurated the Saudi Communications Exhibition for 2004, organized by Riyadh Exhibitions Limited Company.
In a press statement following inauguration of the Exhibition, the Minister said that opening the Saudi Communications Market to competition is one of the executive steps approved by the government, pointing out that a timetable was established to open the mobile phone sector for competition by 2004, the telephone sector by 2006, and other services in early 2007.
