Riyadh, 26th February 2004

Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski is to visit the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia imminently, according to the country’s new ambassador. “The visit was finalized during Foreign Minister Saud Al-Faisal’s trip to Warsaw,” Ambassador Adam Kulach told Arab News in an interview published today.

The Ambassador said that he intends to strengthen understanding between the two countries, with an exchange of high-level visits, and promote cooperation in economic, cultural, scientific, tourism and education fields. “There are several universities in Poland that could help Saudi students to pursue postgraduate studies, which would provide an ideal platform for the exchange of ideas between Saudi and Polish intellectuals,” he said. He also plans to attract Saudi investors to Poland, which is poised for entry into the enlarged European Union.

The Polish Embassy is currently making arrangements with the Saudi government to initiate top-level negotiations with Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, the Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Defence and Aviation, and the Ministers of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Economy and Planning.

The two countries hope to sign a series of agreements on double taxation avoidance, investment protection, air transportation links, and combating terrorism.

Polish exports to the Kingdom are valued at $67.5 million, while its imports of petrochemicals, sheepskin and carpets from Saudi Arabia are estimated to be worth $29.5 million. Exports include, steel, construction materials, glass, food and agricultural products, chemical and rubber products, and electronic equipment.
