25Feb2004 Prince Saud holds press briefing on Israeli wall, Arab reform

Riyadh, 25th February 2004

The Foreign Minister, Prince Saud Al-Faisal, stressed that the segregation wall established by Israel will not only isolate Palestinians but will obstruct all peace initiatives to find a just resolution to the conflict.

In a press briefing today, Al-Faisal said that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia asserted at the International Court of Justice that the wall is illegal, blatantly violating the Geneva Convention and all international resolutions and conventions in this regard.

Prince Saud said that the Kingdom and Egypt agreed to submit a joint paper at the next meeting of the Arab League Council on Arab reform. He noted that the two sides rejected any foreign pattern of imposed reform. “The future of the Arab region should be determined by its own peoples,” he said.

Prince Saud emphasised the necessity of finding just resolutions of Arab and Islamic issues, especially in Palestine and Iraq, to achieve stability in the Middle East region.

Prince Saud spoke about two Britons and a Canadian who were released from jail in the Kingdom due to a royal pardon and their intention to file a lawsuit against the Kingdom because of an alleged harsh treatment. “They were released after their families appealed to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques; they expressed their thanks to the Kingdom’s authorities. In my view, the case is not serious, and will not be accepted by courts. I hope that they do not pursue these measures because the Kingdom treated them fairly,” he said.

Responding to a question on Saudi-Azeri relations, he said: “We consider Azerbaijan a friendly country, with which we enjoy good relations. There is political will between the two countries to develop these relations: That is what we intend to do.”

On Saudi-Yemeni border security cooperation, he stressed the two countries’ agreement on the need to maintain the security of borders.

On the establishment of an Arab free trade zone, Prince Saud reiterated Saudi support and encouragement of any bilateral or collective cooperation in this regard.
