24Feb2004 Kingdom and Egypt issue statement on imposed reform, Iraq, Palestine

Riyadh, 24th February 2004

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz and Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, the Deputy Premier and Commander of the National Guard, today held talks with Egyptian President Mohammed Hosni Mubarak, which covered recent developments in regional and international arenas and bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Kingdom and Egypt today issued a joint statement, at the close of President Mubarak’s visit to Saudi Arabia, in which the leaders said that Arab countries are proceeding on the path of development, modernization and reform in accordance with the interests of their peoples and Arab and Islamic values, and reject the imposition of reform from outside the Arab world.

They noted that achievement of stability in the Middle East makes imperative a just resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the situation in Iraq.

They agreed on a common position on Arab reform, which they will submit to the forthcoming meeting of Arab Foreign Ministers in Cairo.

They reaffirmed the necessity of activating the Arab peace initiative, endorsed by the Arab Summit in Beirut, 2001. The leaders stressed the responsibility of all parties in the conflict to promote negotiation and resolution of the outstanding issues and obstacles to achieving a peaceful settlement.

The leaders reiterated their support of protecting Iraq’s unity, sovereignty and independence, and their commitment to the principle of non-interference in Iraq’s internal affairs. They emphasized the importance of enhancing the role of the United Nations in paving the way for the speedy withdrawal of occupation forces from Iraq. They welcomed the decisions issued by Iraq’s neighbouring countries in Kuwait on 14-15 February, which affirmed the same principles.

The leaders reviewed political and economic relations between the two countries, and agreed to boost all aspects of cooperation.
