Brussels, 19th February 2004

The Foreign Minister, Prince Saud Al-Faisal, on Wednesday met EU Foreign and Security Policy Coordinator Javier Solana.

The meeting, which was attended by the Kingdom’s Ambassador in Brussels Nasser Al-Assaf, discussed the means of enhancing bilateral relations between the Kingdom and the EU and a number of regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Following the meeting, Solana told reporters that his talks with the Foreign Minister were positive and fruitful. He said that a number of topics of mutual concern were discussed, notably the situation in Iraq and the Middle East.

Solana noted that Prince Saud Al-Faisal had briefed him on the meeting of countries neighbouring Iraq, recently held in Kuwait. He added that the views of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the European Union were identical with regard to the importance of establishing stability in Iraq and transferring power and sovereignty to the Iraqi people.

He said that the current situation in the Middle East requires regional and international political initiatives. Solana will attend some sessions of the forthcoming Arab Summit in Tunisia, where he will discuss some topics with the Arab side in this regard.
