08Feb2004 Prince Sultan inaugurates Electronic Commerce Symposium

Abha, Saudi Arabia, 8th February 2004

Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, the Second Deputy Premier, Minister of Defence and Aviation and Inspector General, on Sunday inaugurated the Electronic Commerce Symposium, which is organized by King Khalid University.

At the venue, Prince Sultan was received by Prince Khalid Al-Faisal bin Abdul Aziz, the Governor of Asir Region; Prince Faisal bin Khalid bin Abdul Aziz, the Vice-Governor of Asir Region; Dr Khalid bin Mohammed Al-Anqari, the Minister of Higher Education, and a number of officials.

Prince Sultan cut the ribbon to mark the inauguration of the Electronic Commerce Exhibition held on the fringes of the symposium.

In a speech ceremony held on the occasion, Prince Sultan said: “The Kingdom has witnessed a quantum leap in development of communications and technology, whilst successfully preserving the values and principles of the Islamic religion.” He stressed the keenness of the Saudi government to promote reform in economic and technological fields.

Prince Sultan said that the volume of electronic commerce business in the Kingdom amounted to over SR700 million. Oil and gas industries have been pioneering in adopting and circulating electronic commerce in its businesses and works, he said.

Prince Sultan lauded the success of the privatisation of Saudi communications, which resulted in the expansion and development of electronic and communication services.

The Director of Abha-based King Khalid University, Dr Abdullah bin Mohammed Al-Rashid, said that the symposium was a contribution by the University to the national strategy to improve electronic commerce in the Kingdom, which ranked 45th in the world last year for technological and electronic readiness.
