Mauritius is planning to open a permanent diplomatic mission in Jeddah, Vice-President of Mauritius Raouf Bundhun said yesterday. There are no plans for an embassy in Riyadh, according to a report published by Arab News.
Bundhun also said that a top-level Mauritian business delegation will arrive in the Kingdom imminently.
The tiny Indian Ocean island, with a population of 1.2 million, has an honorary consul, Walid Al-Nowaiser, in Jeddah. “The Mauritius Embassy in Cairo has been responsible for the country’s interests in the Kingdom. We are now considering a strong diplomatic presence here,” he said. The diplomatic mission would attend to the interests of Mauritian expatriates in the Kingdom and issue vacation visas for Mauritius. Mauritius has a significant Muslim minority. Bundhun, who came to the Kingdom to perform Hajj with his wife and two children, said that 2,000 pilgrims from his country performed the annual pilgrimage.
