20Jan2004 Saudi accession to WTO imminent

Jeddah, 20th January 2004

Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Sobatchi Banitchabakdi said that Saudi accession to the WTO is now imminent. “The world is expecting an important country like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia soon to occupy its seat at the WTO,” he said.

Addressing the final working session of the Jeddah Economic Forum on Monday, Banitchabakdi reiterated the importance of a multi-party trade system, and said that the WTO should not be held responsible for problems facing the world economy. Countries that have a healthy economic environment will be capable of dealing with the problem of unemployment, he said. Banitchabakadi noted that the laws of the WTO can boost the fight against poverty in the world, and can contribute to the settlement of disputes between countries.
