18Jan2004 Crown Prince calls for Arab reform

Cairo, 18th January 2004

Prince Saud Al-Faisal, the Foreign Minister, who is on an official visit to Cairo, said that he handed a letter from Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, the Deputy Premier and Commander of the National Guard, to Egyptian President Mohammed Hosni Mubarak. The subject of the letter was cooperation between the two countries to achieve reform in the Arab world.

In a press statement following a meeting with President Mubarak, Prince Saud said that he discussed with the Egyptian President the ideas proposed by the Arab League Secretary General. “We agreed to coordinate our stances on the matter, and hope that we can cooperate to present proposals at the forthcoming Arab Summit that will benefit the Arab nation.”

On whether there are good results of the Arab Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Committee to discuss initiatives for reform of the Arab situation, Prince Saud said that the Committee will hold a meeting next week.

On threats directed against Syria, Prince Saud said: “We hope there will be no threats to any Arab state, including Syria, which has announced its readiness to negotiate.”

With regard to the Kingdom’s stance on peace deals in Sudan, Prince Saud said that he could not discuss the topic, particularly because Sudanese President Omar Al-Basheer was coming to Cairo to discuss the subject imminently.”

On Arab reform, Prince Saud said that the Arab League’s Secretary General has made proposals in this regard, which are currently being studied by relevant parties.
