29Nov2003 Prince Sultan patronises opening of environmental control laboratories

Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, the Second Deputy Premier, Minister of Defence and Aviation and Inspector General, today patronized the opening of phase one of the Central Laboratories for Environmental Control and Environmental Studies Centre, affiliates of the Regional Central for Meteorology and Environment Protection in the Eastern Region.

Escorted by Prince Bandar bin Mohammad bin Abdulrahman and Prince Mohammad bin Fahd bin Abdul Aziz, the Governor of the Eastern Region, Prince Sultan was received by Prince Turki bin Nassir bin Abdul Aziz, the General President of Meteorology and Environment Protection, Dr Hamad bin Abdullah Al-Manei, the Minister of Health, and senior officials.

Addressing the gathering, Prince Turki said that the Central Laboratories for Environmental Control have so far examined 32,000 samples taken from field surveys. He said that the Kingdom has won a lawsuit to claim compensation for environmental damage incurred during the second Gulf War. The United Nations and the Kingdom are yet to agree on an estimated cost for the damage, he said.

Prince Sultan unveiled the plaque, cut the ribbon, and listened to a briefing on the laboratory.
