29Nov2003 Geographic database to locate housing facilities in emergency

Makkah, 29th November 2003

The Hajj Institute of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques is currently conducting a study that aims to establish a geographic information database on housing facilities and services for visitors to Makkah, in order to provide precise locations during any emergency situation.

The database will include the location of over 500 hotels and licensed housing facilities around Al-Haram Mosque, police, Civil Defence and Red Crescent stations, banks, restaurants and shopping malls.

According to Dr Nabeel Koushak, supervisor of the internet department at the Makkah-based Institute, the database will enable security and other public utility services to provide precise locations in the case of any emergency, and reach them very quickly.

He said that the project would be completed in January in order to serve pilgrims during the forthcoming Hajj season, and noted that the database will be available on an internet website.
