27Nov2003 Statement on foiled car-bomb attack

Riyadh, 27th November 2003

In a statement issued today, an official source at the Interior Ministry provided further detail regarding the car-bomb attack foiled by Saudi security forces in Riyadh on 25 November, in which two terrorists were killed and a vehicle prepared for bombing was seized.

The source said that the two terrorists killed in the operation were: Abdulmohsin Abdul Aziz Al-Shabanat, who was killed by security officials, and Mosaed Mohammad Dheedan Al-Sobaiee, who was killed when he detonated a hand grenade he was carrying. Both men were wanted by security forces. The men who escaped during the shootout are currently being pursued by Saudi authorities.

The source added that during the operation, security officials seized a car loaded with explosives, which was camouflaged as a military vehicle. Materials for painting cars and forging documents, military clothes, various weapons, and other items were also found during the operation.
