02Feb2003 Third Makkah Conference on “Islam and Civilization” opened

Makkah, 2nd February 2003

On behalf of Prince Abdul-Majeed bin Abdul Aziz, Governor of Makkah Region, Abdullah Al-Fayez, Undersecretary of the Governorate of Makkah Region, on Saturday inaugurated the third Makkah Conference on “Islam and Civilization”.

The Conference is held under the auspices of the Makkah-based Muslim World League (MWL). Participants will review a number of topics, including the principles of Islam with regard to international relations, the relations of Muslims with others, peaceful means to settle disputes, and the relations of Muslims with others during a time of war. The participants will also discuss the notion of conflict of civilizations, and the special values of different societies.

Addressing the Conference’s inaugural session, Dr Ahmed Ali Al-Imam, Advisor of the Sudanese President, praised the significant role played by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in service of Muslim causes. He stressed the importance of the Conference, and expressed his hope that it would yield positive results.

Dr Abdullah Al-Turki, Secretary General of the MWL, said that convening the Conference comes at a time when Islam is accused of supporting terrorism and extremism. “Certain quarters have been plotting and launching biased campaigns against Islam,” he said.

Dr Al-Turki pointed out that Islam accords great attention to the relations of Muslims with others, and to the rights of non-Muslims. “Islam is the religion of mercy, cooperation, peace and security, and it is not a religion of disputes and conflicts,” he said. Dr Al-Turki lauded the efforts of Saudi officials in the service of Islam and Muslims.
