30Jan2003 International Labour Organisation official holds press conference

Riyadh, 30th January 2003

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the International Labour Organization, Lord Bright, held a press conference last night, as part of his current visit to the Kingdom.

The press conference was attended by the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Dr Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Namlah, and a number of Ministry officials.

Lord Bright said that during his visit to the Kingdom, he had met a number of senior officials and conveyed the Organization’s appreciation of the Kingdom’s positive role and effective contribution, particularly to aid the Palestinian people.

He said that he was impressed with the Kingdom’s efforts to nationalize jobs and encourage young Saudis to enter the job market.

He commended both the Saudi decision to increase the minimum age of camel race workers to 18 years and the Kingdom’s social security program.

In response to questions, he stressed the importance of training young Saudis to qualify for jobs in the market place, and of cooperation between the Kingdom and the Organization in the field of training, professional health and international labour standards.

Finally, Lord Bright lauded the treatment received by foreign workers in the Kingdom.
