Tunis, 14th January 2003

The Council of Arab Interior Ministers concluded its 20th session here today.

Prince Naif bin Abdul Aziz, Minister of The Interior, and Honorary President of the Council, headed the Kingdom’s delegation to the session.

Addressing the closing session, Prince Naif spoke on the important role of information in service of Arab security, noting that information is the most effective means of this era. Since information considerably affects public opinion, we hope that information can perform its role to support security bodies in defending the interests of Arab and Muslim nations, peace and freedom, in order to confront misinformation and refute fabrications targeting our peoples and citizens everywhere, he said.

Prince Naif stressed the determination of Arab Interior Ministries and security organs to fight terrorism, not by repression but by awareness and guidance.

He pointed out that misinformation distorts the views of others, stressing that Arab journalists and intelligentsia have a great role to play in correcting ill-conceived perceptions and explaining that the Arab nation is a nation of peace, which desires stability to build itself and flourish.

Secretary General of the Council, Dr Mohammed bin Ali Kuman, then read the final communiqué, which noted that the Ministers formed a technical-expert committee of Arab and Justice Ministerial Councils related to the endeavour to combat terrorism.

The Council approved a report presented by Prince Naif, who is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Arab Naif Academy for Security Sciences, on the Academy’s activities last year. The Council expressed its appreciation for the Prince’s efforts exerted to support implementation of the Academy’s activities and programs.

The Arab Interior Ministers also approved annual reports regarding the execution of phased plans comprising the following: Third Arab Security Plan; Arab Information Plan for Security Awareness and Prevention of Crime; Second Plan of Arab Strategy for Fighting Terrorism, and Third Plan of Arab Strategy for Fighting Illicit Use of Drugs.
